COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER
Academic Awards and Senior Scholarship Evening
We are pleased to announce that our annual Awards Ceremony will be held on Wednesday, May 12 at 7:00 p.m. You will receive an invitation in the mail if your daughter will be receiving an award. We kindly request that all families who receive an invitation respond by email to jmcdermott@carondeleths.org with “Awards” in the subject line, by May 3. Please include your daughter’s name, No, or Yes, and the number of people attending. We are looking forward to this special event, when we honor students from 9th through 12th grades for their academic achievements in subject areas and for academic excellence with a cumulative 4.0 GPA.
Our graduating seniors will be recognized for their membership in the California Scholarship Federation as well as the National Honor Society, and for their civic achievements. Seniors will also be honored for the scholarships that they have been offered by the college that they will be attending.
These awards are meant to be a surprise. Please do not call the school to ask what award(s) your daughter will be receiving. School personnel do not have this information, or may not share it with you.
Students should remember to dress appropriately. Dressing properly shows respect for those students receiving hard-earned awards. Students should refrain from wearing flip- flops, very short skirts or dresses, or revealing outfits. Also, they should refrain from chewing gum.
We look forward to this special evening and urge you to stay for the entire program.
Senior Counseling
Seniors who are going on to Diablo Valley College were given assessment tests in both English and math on March 22. Students who missed the test should contact the DVC Assessment Center at 685.1230 ext. 2545 or refer to the information on the website for drop-in testing dates and times at www.dvc.edu/admissions/assessment_center.htm .
If students will enroll at a CSU campus and have not fulfilled the ELM/EPT requirement by way of their SAT, ACT or AP scores, the May 1 ELM/EPT Placement test is the final test date to complete this requirement. Most students choose to take the tests locally at CSU East Bay at either the Concord or Hayward campus. Students can link to ELM/EPT information from Naviance or go directly to www.testing.csuhayward.edu.
Seniors who will attend UC campuses and who have not fulfilled the Analytical Writing requirement by way of their SAT, ACT or AP scores must register to take the exam on Saturday, May 8. Information is available online at www.ucop.edu/sas/awpe.
The “Larger than Life” wall, outside of the College and Career Center, features “planets” individually designed by our seniors with their names and the colleges that they will be attending. Please encourage your daughter to participate!
Parents of seniors may enjoy reading a book called Letting Go: A Parents’ Guide to Understanding the College Years by Karen Levin Coburn and Madge Lawrence Treeger.
Junior Counseling
Juniors and their parents attended a College Preview Night on April 21 in the Hofmann Center at De La Salle. Representatives from the University of California, California State University, Community College, and independent and out-of -state colleges spoke about the unique features of their institutions. The college representatives also addressed a variety of topics including admissions cycles, the role of the parent, and how students can best present themselves in their applications.
Online registration for 2010/2011 college entrance examinations for next fall will soon be available for the ACT at www.act.org and for the SAT and SAT Subject Tests at www.collegeboard.com. Avoid the rush and register now for fall dates. Please note that a number of CSU campuses, including Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo, CSU Fullerton, CSU Long Beach, Cal Poly Pomona, and San Diego State have recommended that students take SAT Reasoning Tests or ACT Assessment tests no later than October.
Junior student-athletes who hope to compete in NCAA Division I or Division II sports should register with the NCAA Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse in the spring of the junior year. The Clearinghouse operates a separate web site at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net, which maintains and processes all of the initial eligibility certifications. The Clearinghouse provides certification of eligibility by examining the student’s high school transcript and test scores. Students should follow the directions for filling out the online form, including printing out the release forms authorizing our registrar, Mrs. Missaggia, to send transcripts to the NCAA Clearinghouse. The Guide for the College-Bound Student-Athlete which contains the eligibility and recruiting guidelines is also available online.
In March and April, juniors have been “Getting Started on the Road to College,” and working with the college counselors in the computer lab. Topics covered include a timeline for the college application process, preparing for college applications, essay and Personal Statement topics, and entrance testing, and conducting detailed college searches. Juniors are encouraged to sign up for individual college counseling appointments after they have completed their college counseling assignment, junior questionnaire and “About Me” sections of Naviance. Access to Naviance is available through the CHS website. Please remember that colleges use email to communicate with students and the email address should be appropriate.
Summer Programs
Information on summer academic and enrichment programs is available on Naviance and in the College and Career Center. Carondelet does not endorse any programs but provides the information as a resource to students and their families. Students, particularly juniors, may want to explore the possibility of participating in a volunteer activity or summer program.
Scholarships
Juniors and seniors can access a listing of current scholarships on Naviance. Students should come to the College and Career Center if they need help or cannot locate their password. Please find a sampling of scholarships currently available to students:
